Half Moon Bay Labor Day Cruise

Here's your chance to get in some ocean sailing. Many poeple don't realize that the winds outside the Gate are often much nicer than the funnel going through the Gate. Besides, what better way to travel outside the Gate than with a bunch of Islanders nearby to show you the way, or lend a hand if necessary. We can keep a radio watch together on channel 72. It's an easy 25 miles outside the Gate to HMB. The Plan Rendezvous off Golden Gate YC at 1100 Saturday the 5th to catch a weak 1.2 knot max ebb out under the Golden Gate Bridge. Bear to port after Mile Rock, and stay about a half mile off Seal Rocks as you turn south. Aim a little offshor for Pt. San Pedro and Pt. Montara - 171 degrees magnetic. Then come to 135 magnetic for 3.6 miles to clear Sail Rock. Swing further to port to 92 degrees magnetic, 1.2 miles, for buoy G3. Finally, 341 magnetic, .9 miles to the harbor entrance. There are no longer moorings in the Half Moon Bay outer harbor, but there might be space in the inner harbor but dock space is on a first-come-first served basis - no reservations. Check with the Pillar Point Harbormaster at (650) 726-4382, or on VHF 16/74 if you are interested. You can call or radio in to see about slip availability when about an hour from arrival, and if there's one available, the Harbor Master could assign one over the air. If you anchor you have to dinghy over to the HMB floating dinghy dock. The dock "ferry" to shore is a hoot, and it is quite a fun "haul" to get ashore. As of August 14th, we've got have Kapai, LunaSea, Zenith and Vanishing Animal (by car) confirmed. Kerry on Cali, Mike and Liz on Green Flash and Dan Throop on Windcatcher are maybes and we hope they come!! Nancy Ibison tells me that Richmond YC is going the same weekend so it should be a grand party. On Labor Day Monday, the 7th, slack before ebb at the golden Gate is 1123, so an early departure from HMB, say 0800 - gets you to the bridge just as the ebb is starting which will minimize your time against the ebb. Fortunately, it will only be a 2.0 knot ebb max at 1401, so it's not a particularly challenging current to deal with. Party Half Moon Bay YC is putting on a great party weekend. Saturday night is Western BBQ night, including live music - good for listening and probably great to dance to as well. Here are the Menu choices: SATURDAY DINNER (5pm to 7pm): BBQ Chicken, BBQ Ribs ($35) Veggie Skewers ($30) Kids Chicken Tenders ($10) Hot Sides: Grilled Corn on the Cob, Western Chili Beans. Cold Sides: Red Potato Salad, Tomato-Cucumber and Feta Salad. Dessert: Chocolate Chip Cookie/Brownie There is also a Sunday Dinner at HMBYC, but as of 8/14/26 the I-36 fleet is focused on the Saturday dinner and Sunday's options are still on the table, including a suggestion to try Barbara's Fishtrap.
