May 18, 2003 Bay to Breakers (Foot)Race |
Seven years ago Pat & Gary Salvo and Kay Farrell started "running" in the annual Bay to Breakers race from the Bay side of San Francisco near the beginning of Howard Street, across the city to finish at the ocean side of Golden Gate Park - hence the name "Bay to Breakers". You may have heard about the 50-70,000 people who participate - as real world class runners, "centipedes" of teams tied together, and all manner of costumes from the sublime to the nude.
Two years ago Kay lost her battle with cancer, but Pat & Gary, joined by Kay's daughter Marci Monroe-Jones and husband Brian, and Kay's son Mike Monroe, plus Islanders Fran & Brian Jacobs, Judy Bush, Linda McClellan, and Barb Cucksey have carried on the tradition. This year the race fell on the same day as the Farallones Event or there might have been more participants. Roger McClellan and Dennis Bush stayed aboard 4 Our Sanity and Natural High in South Beach Harbor (come to think of it, thoses are great names for this occasion!). The team walked the whole 7 miles up Howard Street, over the hill (Heartbreak Hill to the runners), and through Golden Gate Park to the finish, then took the Muni back to the harbor. Thank Gary for most of the pictures.
