Season/Major Event Check List

 

Top of Spar

Check all cotter pins/turn buckles
Make sure shackles are tight & wired
Check pins through spreaders
Oil all shieves
Spray sail track groove
Check all screws in fittings

Halyards:

Check for meathooks
Check splices
Oil shackles, put on thongs

Sheets:

Check knots for wear
Oil shackles, put on thongs

Sails:

Spread out each sail
Check for wear(corners in particular)
Oil clips, sand if necessary

Mainsail:

Check as above sails and in addition:
Check headboard
Check battens, sewn in
Resew on telltales or renew

Spinnaker Pole & Reaching Strut

Oil ends, check wires

General/ Rigging

Check lower end of all standing rigging
Check anchor points of all lifelines
Replace telltales on shrouds

Mechanical items (on deck):

Take all winches apart
Check all halyard locks
Clean and wipe all parts with lacquer thinner
Re-grease with winch grease
Oil all winch handles (locking) and ratchet handle
Oil all snatch blocks, turning blocks & lead blocks
Put ties on blocks and thongs
Oil traveler
Grease hydraulic backstay (3 in 1 oil)

General:

Check all lights including flashlights
Check safety harnesses
Check engine oil level & transmission level
Inspect / lubricate rudder post

Fill alcohol for stove
Fill water tanks ½ full
Fill gas tank
Pump holding tank

Clean bilge thoroughly
Clean head thoroughly
Clean stove including burners
Clean out hanging locker
Clean out all cubbys and stowage lockers and label for trip

Pack all spinnakers
Layout sails in bin ready for use

Charge batteries (one each for a day)
Sharpen pencils for navigator; have note pads handy
Lay out charts for navigator according to use on trip
Check calculator, VHF, GPS, Loran & computer
Wind clock
Sort tool drawers

If in other than home port, or as needed:
Connect to shore current- start charging necessary items
Begin buying daily paper with weather map and save
Check out good radio stations and begin a weather log
Check out ice (both dry and regular)- start cooling ice-box and order ahead or reserve ice if necessary for trip.
Locate West Marine truck or nautical supply/hardware store
Check out grocery store delivery schedule etc.

Make up menu list and shop or order
Post menu list
Sort groceries by meal and staples
Pack all groceries (non-perishable) in daily bags for use, & stow.
Do any pre-cooking necessary
