Rarely do you get a chance to listen to and learn from some of the best sailors on the Bay all in one place - and have some of them step aboard your boat and give you some pointers for making her go faster (and safer!) The Islander Fleet Race Clinic, Saturday March 27th at the St. Francis Yacht Club is your chance. We'll have a full day of activities with classroom, dockside and on-the-water coaching. This is one you don't want to miss if you can possibly make it. Your mentors and coaches will include fleet champions Jim Robinson, Don Schumacher, Peter Szasz, and Lou Zevanov. Plus Barry Stompe, Rick Van Mell, and Chris Boome - world class sailor and ex-Barient expert, plus one each from North Sails and Grand Prix Sailing Academy Here's the drill: Report to St. Francis YC at 0930. From 0930 to 1030 we'll be in a classroom reviewing the day's agenda and talking about two main issues: setting up your boat to sail fast; and what each member of your crew might typically be doing while winning races. From 1030 to 1145 we will be dockside with one or two boats showing hands-on what we talked about in the classroom: how to rig your boat; and demonstrating winning crew practices. You'll get a quick buffet lunch break from 1145 to 1230. There will be a charge of $20 per person for lunch and to cover some of the cost of materials provided. Then it's time to cast off and get out to the sailing area in front of the club by 1300. The first 8 boats that sign up will likely have their own coaches on board. We plan to have an inflatable to coach from the water, and possibly even take skippers off their boats to see how their boats are set up. We'll practice the set-up activities and crew work - particularly tacking - until about 1400. At 1400 it's time for an hour of starting practice. At 5 minute intervals, that's more starts than the whole season!!! Now that you're really sharp and ready to go, from 1500 to 1600 we'll try two or three short races up the shore and back. You've then well-earned a return to the dock, libations, celebrations and stories about what you've learned. So..... if you don't want to be left ashore, you'd better fill out the participation form below - first come, first served! If we get more boats than we have on-board coaches for, we'll assign coaches to the newest racers first. Skippers may want to come and just listen to the talks and serve as crew members on another boat. To be fully crewed for good racing, it's recommended a boat race with 5 or 6 (or even 7) crew members, so it's likely we'll find room aboard a boat for those that want a place. Welcome aboard for a great 2004 season with the most vital "grand old fleet" on the Bay! For additional details or questions, contact event Coordinator Peter Szasz |
