Fall Meeting at Coyote Point YC 11/9/19

(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)

Cool and clear greeted your Islander fleet as we gathered at Coyote Point Yacht Club for our annual Fall Meeting and Winners dinner. Founding member Lou Zevanov and his son Steve brought Diana to the guest dock and was joined by John & Nanci Melton's Freedom Won to show off our great boats. In total 24 boats were represented by 47 people who enjoyed a terrific presentation by David Book on the restoration of Hangover and sailing off to the beautiful waters of Hawaii. The season's champions were presented with their trophies, and the special awards were given out. We had the whole 45 year span of membership represented including founding member Lou Zevanov to members new this year, and we elected new Officers for 2020. Here the attending list:

Jocelyn Swanson, our 2019 Vice Commodore, did an excellent job of setting up CPYC for the meeting. With help from Eric Mueller, the welcome table had names tags for everyone. Then she started with an overflowing tray of great cheeses from Costco with plenty of crackers and an assortment of cold cuts, plus warm spanikopita and little chicken and cilanto potstickers that made for a great hors d'oeuvre table. The catered buffet started off with a fresh salad with blue cheese, walnuts, apples, cranberries and spinach. Then came the Chicken Marsala, Based Short Ribs, a vegetarian Portobello Mushroom, and finally, creamy potatoes and mixed vegetables. It all finished up with chocolate covered chocolate mousse and cream cheese nuggets for dessert.

David Book had our full attention and plenty of laughs and smiles as he described his odyssey from a starter boat that went aground in Half Moon Bay, through an intermediary boat, then on to (as the salesman told him) "The World's Fastest Production Boat!" There was a lot to do when he first got Hangover. Much of the head and forward cabin was taken out and rebuilt. Flooring and frames were rebuilt and bulkheads made secure. When done the interior looked terrific. Outside the bottom was redone and particular attention given to the rudder.

He had long dreamed of sailing to Hawaii - how much fun, and how hard could it be? So, with encouragement from his daughter Paige he stopped procrastinating and made the move. Though he and Paige have sailed for their lifetimes, Yann was a newcomer to sailing, and the 4th crew sailed for the first time barely weeks before they departed. With some weather routing by text message from a friend in Tasmania (no less!), they caught a strong northwester as they departed Monterey and after the first six hours were making 9 knots! 24 hours later they were off Los Angeles, and 2 days out had crossed the latitude of Mexico. Despite advice to stay left and hang on south, the urge to turn right and aim at Hawaii won out. Two days later they were enjoying swimming off the boat in a dead calm. Lots of fresh food, rain squalls, periods of surfing seas, and 21 days out they arrived in Honolulu. Shunning the city life, they learned to make the 8 hour run around the southeast coast of Oahu to Kaneohe Bay with a great big open lagoon protected by a giant sandbar. It was wonderful to have three of the four crew present to share the story: David, daughter Paige, and Yann Brown. Thanks David for a great evening.

On to the business of the evening, Commodore Eric Mueller called for a Treasury report - "We have money," said Roy, then on to Jocelyn for a Membership report - We have members from 25 states and as far away as Tasmania!

Bob DaPrato did the honors for the Cruising events for the year, awarding the annual Winton Cruising Award to Liz Munnalley and Mike Patterson, Green Flash, for their support of cruising activities.

Eric and Race Chair Roger Anderson gave out the racing awards. The Ormand Cup went to Renaissance of Tahoe Vista, Steve Douglass, for 1st place in the Season's Championship Spinnaker Division. The Buster Hammond Trophy went to Serenity for 1st place in the Season's championship Non-Spinnaker Division. 1st place for the Nationals Regatta went to Bill Hackel and Highlighter. Wrapping up the racing section, the Perpetual Crew Award went to Greg Anderson of Serenity, with honorable mention to Frank Burkhart's two sons who sailed on Island Girl.

Eric then presented the Schneider Trophy for service to the Association to Phill Seamans (ex-Mouse Pad) for his dedication as Newsletter Editor and his ability to nag, badger and cajole all of us into providing the stories he needs. The Newsletter is a vital component of our communication with our members and contributes greatly to the connection we all share as members of the Islander 36 Association.

Eric then wrapped up with the election of 2020 Officers. Though there were some initial vacancies, volunteers were recruited, and the 2020 Officers elected are:

Jocelyn Swanson (Zingara) Commodore
Rick Egan (Kapai) Vice Commodore
Roy Samuelson (Some Day) Treasurer
Mike Patterson (Green Flash) Secretary
Kit Wiegman (Cassiopeia) Measurer
Bill Hackel (Highlighter) Fleet Captain
Liz Munnelly (Green Flash) Cruise Chair
Philip Seaman (ex-Mouse Pad) Newsletter Editor
Steve Swanson (Zingara) Membership Chair
Rick Van Mell (Vanishing Animal) Webmaster
Eric Mueller (Serenity) Staff Commodore

So enjoy the pictures, then make a note to check the tides and weather to join us Wednesday, January 1st 2020 for the 'Round Alameda Parade. (Weather permitting.)
