Annual Fall Meeting on Zoom 11/7/20

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, like most everything else in 2020 our Annual Fall Meeting and Winners Dinner became a virtual event Zoom meeting. But, like a number of things we did this year, we made lemonade out of lemons and had 33 participants from three countries and 5 states representing 25 Islanders. We certainly covered a lot of territory! From David Smookler (Melody) in Hull, MA it was 2,407 miles to Margo Callaghan (Bokonon) in Panama, and Margo was 3,697 miles from Bert Vermeer (Natasha) in Sidney, BC. Along that path, in addition to the San Francisco Bay area, were Liz Munnelly and Mike Patterson (Green Flash in Portland, OR and Greg Greene (Whisper) in Tacoma, WA. You can expand the envelope a bit by adding David Herring (Galatea) in Minneapolis, MN, and Rob Kirby (Seahorse) near Houston, TX. Here's the complete list of attendees:

One of the functions of the Annual Meeting is to elect officers for the coming year. We were delighted that our members could put faces with names they have heard over the years as almost all of our 2020 and 2021 Officers were present:

Without a regular Season's Championship racing season, or the chance to try Liz Munnelly creative cruising season, the winners and awards for those events were put on hole for the year. We were able to pull off a very enjoyable one-race (Nationals Regatta and for the third year in a row it was won by Bill Hackel aboard Highlighter.

The Schneider Trophy is awarded to one or more individuals for their continued dedication and generous support of our Islander 36 Association. This year's winner is Roy Samuelson for his excellent work as our Treasurer for the past five years.

PacCup 2020 was cancelled due to Covid19. However, four Islanders have already signed up for the 2022 race. Each captain introduced themselves and talked about their background and preparations for the upcoming race.

• David Book of Monterey, Hangover
• Kit Wiegman of Alameda, Cassiopeia
• David Herring of Minneapolis, Galatea
• Kerry Scott of Vallejo, CALI

David, by the way, was actually aboard Hangover, with his guitar visible on the upper bunk behind him. (In the picture above, 2nd row, left end.) The skippers talked about the preparation for the race, particularly the Offshore Safety requirements. This is a significant upfront cost when doing the race for the first time, but quite modest for subsequent ocean races of all kinds.

Equally interesting from the race itself was the discussion of the best way to bring the boat back after the race. Going up and over the Pacific High is a "normal" route, but the temptation to add lots of fuel and power east is also an option. If you have the time you can listen to the stories in the full Zoom video.

Finally, Membership Chair Steve Swanson was happy to report that we currently have 129 members, 1 located in Switzerland, 2 in the UK, 3 in Australia, 13 in Canada, 111 in the US.

Time to look forward to 2021, starting with the annual January 1st 'Round Alameda Parade. While it's not likely yacht clubs will be hosting crowds of people, it could be a great day to get out on the water with your family or pod to celebrate a new year which we all hope will be better thn the current one. The tides should be just about perfect. Here's the link for info and to sign up: http://islander36.org/newyear21/newyear21details.html
