Nationals Regatta at GGYC 10/4/25

Great Day! Great Fun! Perfect weather greeted the three early arriving Islander 36s at Golden Gate Yacht Club for our annual Nationals Regatta. Four more arrived to make for 7 I-36s on the starting line, plus an additional 6 skippers represented their boats either by crewing on other boats, or running the race from the Race Deck. That gave us a total of 34 folks representing 13 Islanders. Even though GGYC General Manager Bob Mulhern was sidelined by a fall and hip replacement, his son Sean and Rear Commodore John Volpe carried on the wonderful, and very much appreciated, support GGYC has given the I 36 Association over the years.

The results were as spectacular as the weather was perfect. Bright blue skies and 10 - 15 knots of steady west wind made for great sailing. To accomodate GGYC holding a Celebration of Life for 140 people upstairs, we were asked to clear the Race Deck by 1300. The good winds enabled us to start with Course 2, a 3.4 mile windward - leeward race upwind to Blackaller Buoy, then down to #6 at Fort Mason, and finish back st GGYC's X mark. With an on-time 1135 start, the first race was finished shortly before 1230.

We were in awe of the numerous squadrons of pelicans overhead and skimming the water - well over a hundred and they are captured in the pics below.

For the 2nd race we chose Course 7, a 5.2 mile triangle up to Blackaller, then a broad reach to Harding Rock, and a reach back to Ft Mason and the upwind finish at GGYC. With the second race under way at 1240, we were able to clear the Race Deck by 1253, as requested.

To encourage more participation in a 50 year old fleet, we established some rating adjustment to the standard 144 PHRF rating for fixed props, tall rigs and smaller or larget headsails. That all came into play and resulted in very close racing, Behind Windwalker winning both races, the remaining six boats wound up in 3 pairs of ties with place scoring being: 1, 5, 5, 9, 9, and 13, 13. The ties were broken by totaling the corrected times for both races. All are listed in the table below. When all was said and done, 2nd place was decided by 10 seconds, 4th place by 16 seconds, and 6th place by 14 seconds. Congratulations to all of the captains and crews for good sailing and friendly competition. Congratulations to Windwalker, Luna Sea, and Blondie. Also a big shout out to Bob DaPrato who secured our event at GGYC, and Regatta Coordinator Rick Van Mell for organizing things and serving as PRO for the Race Committee to put together two fun races. Mark your calendars for our Fall Meeting and Winners Celebration Dinner coming up on Saturday November 8 at Richmond YC.

Here's the list of the 7 boats on the starting line and the total of 13 I-36s represented by 34 people.
