Pacific Cup Start 7/4/22 |
It was a cool but gentle day on the Bay for the start of the Pacific Cup race to Hawaii. Islanders Galatea, David Herring from Lake Superior, Cali, Kerry Scott, and Cassiopeia, Kit Wiegman, are representing the Islander Association in grand style. Island Girl, Frank Burkhart, was also in the starting area taking pics for the PacCup committee, and our own Commodore Rick Egan and Kapai were there to capture the pictures below.
On Friday, July 8th, Galatea was leading Cassiopeia and Cali, with Galatea southern most of the group and Cali more northerly.
At about 12:12 PDT on Friday, 7/8 Cassiopeia turned around and headed back. Race management issued the following statement: Kit Wegman’s Islander 36 Cassiopeia has made the decision to retire from the race and head back to port. Going slower than anticipated, the crew could foresee logistical, travel, work and food/water challenges, and has instead decided to pack it in and head home. All on board are safe, with no problems to report. Cassiopeia sailed back under the Golden Gate into San Francisco Bay at about 14:30 on Sunday, July 10th.
Galatea is passing the course mid-point on Tuesday the 12th at 0540, approximately 170 miles ahead of Cali.
Galatea Finished at 19:48:09 on Tuesday the 19th to capture 3rd place in the Ocean Navigator Division behind two Cal 40s. Congratulation to David Herring and his crew!
Cali is expected to finish on Friday, 7/22 around 2200 hours.
