Spring Meeting 3/25/23 at Richmond YC

A beautiful spring day greeted our Islander 36 Association members for our Spring Meeting at Richmond Yacht Club. We had 40 people representing 22 boats that gathered for the fun and to recognize a new group of Honorary members. Here's the list, but read on for all the fun and pictures.

Rick & Sandy arrived at Richmond YC at 10:30 to begin setting up for the meeting. Commodore Rick and Cathy Egan arrived a few minutes later. RYC Manager Curtis Lew had already set up a registration table and video screen, and helped us set up their advanced audio visual gear to connect a laptop to their projector for the slide show and microphones for the speaker's podium. When Mike Patterson and Liz Munnally arrived we also set up his laptop for a Zoom session during the meeting.

Richmond YC's 2016 remodel included a wonderful reception, bar and lounge area, with a double gas fireplace and an elevator. Several of our member enjoyed the elevator ride rather than climbng the staris to the second deck where the meeting was held. The big glass doors overlooking the Brickyard Cove marnia opened onto a sunny balcony to easily enjoy the view.

RYC's crew laid out a bountiful taco buffet, complete with tortillas, veggies, beans and rice, plus both chicken and beef fillings, then add various toppings, salad and soup. Warm churos finished off the feast.

Our guest speaker was Tanya James who is both an Operator and Supervisor at the US Coast Guard's Vessel Traffic Service, or "VTS" She explained that VTS covers about a 5,000 square mile area from well offshore through the Golden Gate, both the South and Main bays, then on east to the Delta and north to Sacramento and south to Stockton. Their mission is safety for all concerned. That's both the big ships and all of us who venture out on the bay. They track about 400 movements per day, or around 150,000 per year. Communication is on VHF channel 12 for the offshore waters, channel 14 for inside the Gate, plus channel 13 for ship bridge to bridge traffic, and monitoring channel 16 for safety and other Coast Guard calls. There are numerous cameras, radars and repeater radios to complete the communication package. The advent of AIS has greatly helped identifying radar targets as well as providing lots of information about each vessel. Tanya encouraged sailors (and powerboaters) to listen on channel 14 if there is concern about large vessel traffic. One question was about the communication referring to places that don't appear on nautical charts, particularly berth and pier locations. Thus, someone hearing a conversation that a ship is headed for Oakland berth 65 doesn't know where that is. Tanya encouraged us to call VTS on channel 14 and ask for a clarification if they are in the general vicinity an wishing to avoid being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Do, however, wait for a lull in VTS traffic before you make your call. Another question was about if/how VTS learned about the CG permits yacht clubs need to get for holding regattas. While the general area, fleet size and timing are important, it is also important the yacht club Race Committees contact VTS with their intended courses, particularly if they will be crossing shipping lanes. Everyone enjoyed her presentation and Jocelyn is working with her to try to arrange a tour of the VTS operation on Yerba Buena island.

For the business meeeting that followed, Jecelyn advised we have about 120 members, and Mike advised we have about $11K in the till.

Commodore Egan reviewed the Race Schedule, particularly that the South Bay Bridge Series (formerly known as the Inter Club series) was coming up soon with the 1st race on April 8th. All racers need to get registered for the South Bay Bridge Series.. Use this link or it's on our home page and the Race Schedule page. Adding in the Vallejo Race and the Westpoint and Encinal Regattas makes for some variety in the championship series. And, both Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker divisions will be scored. Then we have the Nationals Regatta at Golden Gate YC on October 14, a little later that prior years. The only official cruise event is the Summer Sailstice Rally on June 24th, hopefully with a raft-up in Clipper Cove, Treasure Island following the rally. It's a perfect day to bring the whole family or neighbors to enjoy a Day on the Bay.

Rick Van Mell then presented the member recognition part of the agenda. Our Constitution has an Honorary Member category for members who have been in the Association for 25 years or more, have retired, sold or not actively use their boats, and who have contributed to the Association, particularly as Officers. We currently have named five Honorary members, including founding members Lou Zevanov, Diana and Don Wilson, Rachel Rose, and of them were with us at the meeting, Joe Artese who designed the interior of our Islanders, Art & Betsy Fowler, Zenith, and Skipper & Nancy Wall, Snowflower, who we lost last year. For the Honorary Member class of 2023, we recognized Kathryn Munn and Charles Hodgkins, Mischief, Don & Barbara Henderson, Kindred Spirits, Dennis & Judy Bush, Natural High, Gary & Pat Salvo, Ophira, and Harry Farrell, Pacific High. We were happpy to see that Jim Mullarkey, the new owner of Kindred Spirits was present and got to meet Don & Barbara for the first time. The rest of Rick's member recognition presentation, including members with 25 years of membership who are still active, will appear in the next issue of the Newsletter.

So enjoy the pictures and we look forward to seeing you back on the water at I-36 events soon.
