Spring Meeting 3/1/25 at Encinal YC

Periods of sun, then cloudy and 15 - 20 knot windy, but that did not deter our fearless and faithful Islander 36 Association members from our Spring Meeting at Encinal Yacht Club. We had 28 people representing 11 boats that gathered for the fun and to hear Jesse Johnson and Sara Rutman's presentation on the USCG cutter Munro. Here are the attendees:

We had three Islanders at the Encinal docks for the afternoon meeting: Blondie, Kevin Cerini, Luna Sea, Dan Knox, and Windcatcher, Dan Throop. It was great to see our Islanders at the dock.

A large and happy crowd surrounded the Encinal bar and it was almost 1600 before Commodore Egan corralled everyone to get their refills and adjourn to the Regatta Room for Jesse Johnson's presentation and our Business Meeting. Commodore Rick Egan kicked off the meeting with a welcome and introduced our officers.

Here's Rick's introduction of Jesse: "Jesse Johnson aka JJ is currently an Ensign onboard USCGC MUNRO, a national security cutter based in Alameda, CA. In his current position, JJ is a Deck Watch Officer in charge of driving the ship, route planning, and guaranteeing the safe navigation for all AORs (area of responsibility) and Missions. He recently completed two anti-narcotic missions in the southern hemisphere, detaining over a billion dollars' worth of narcotics. His next mission will be a search and rescue patrol in the Aleutian chain of Alaska. In his leisure, JJ has been known to crew for past commodore Bob Da Prado on Bella Luna.

Jesse's partner in the presentation was ship mate is LTJG Sara Rutman, and engineer. She has been with the coast guard for 7 years and hails from Delaware. She joined the CG for its humanitarian mission. Also, she packs a "45" and claims to prefer it over a 9MM.

Jesse and Sara gave an outstanding presentation that covered the broad scope of what the Coast Guard does. Their slide presentation is captured in the pictures below. Aboard the cutter Munro, they covered about 2/3 of the whole Pacific Ocean basin, from the Bering Sea to the Philippines and east to Peru. Their crew size on the 418' cutter is typically 150. Their missions ranged from what we traditionally think of as CG missions, like finding and rescuing people at sea, to drug interdiction, fisheries inspections for both safety and environmentally appropriate catches, and on to the mundane but critical maintenance of aids to navigation and communication support through VHF radio. There were plenty of questions and lively discussions of various topics, with "stopping the bad guys" high on the list.

Then on to the 2025 Race Schedule and 2025 Cruise Schedule. This year we are able to schedule both our enjoyable Summer Sailstice Rally on June 21st and the popular Westpoint Regatta on Jul12th since they don't conflict.

Treasurer Mike Patterson's report advised that we have about $9K in the treasury and we have 72 signed up members before our March reminder to all.

Then we all adjourned upstairs for libations and great food ordered from the Encinal menu. It was wonderful to have a good audience for the presenters, but even more delightful to have over 20 of the Islander family enjoying dinner together. This format of supporting a yacht club by patronizing their bar and ordering off their menus is both more flexible for and less expensive for both our members and the Association.

Pictures so far are by Rick Van Mell. Enjoy, and we look forward to seeing you back on the water at I-36 events soon.
