We had five Islanders tied up at the Encinal docks: Blondie, Kevin Cerini, Luna Sea, Dan Knox, Kapai, Rick Egan, Windcatcher, Dan Throop, and Zenith, Anthony Taylor. It was great to see so many Islanders all together.

How about 75 degrees on February 28th for our Spring Meeting at Encinal Yacht Club! A pair of shorts on board was required equipment. Many thanks to Encinal Yacht Club for hosting our event in its 52nd year. We had 25 members and guests representing 12 boats at the meeting. Dan Knox on Luna Sea arrived first and helped the Commodore and Admiral tie up Kapai. Blondie and Zenith soon followed. Much to our surprise there was no sign of Glass Slipper. Glass Slipper is a very tricked out electric hybrid Antrim 40 developed by Cree Partridge and Sean Shigley of Berkeley Marine. She was to be the topic of interest for this year’s guest speakers and planned to arrive before low tide but got stuck in the mud in Berkeley. Cree assured us that the show must go on and he planned to bring a PowerPoint presentation as back up.

Other guests arrived and made their way to the bar for liquid sustenance and the greeting of old friends. It was particularly nice to see founding member Lou Zevanove .

Commodore Egan called the meeting to order and after a brief welcome introduced Cree and Sean who provided a very cool description and history of Glass Slipper. The design goal for the boat was to build a lightweight carbon fiber sled displacing a mere 8000 lbs. A hybrid electric powerplant with a hydrogen fuel cell and regeneration under sail combined to give Glass Slipper sufficient range to race to Hawaii and back. The Islander group asked many good questions, and a lively discussion of range and safety ensued. We are a polite group and not one person brought up the Hindenburg. Cree and Sean have done quite a few electric repowers and estimate the cost to repower an Islander 36 at around $20K. This was really a great presentation. Thanks Cree and Sean along with Bob DaPrato for organizing the presentation.

The Commodore switched gears to introduce our officers including new cruise chairs Anthony and Joanne Taylor. Anthony and Joanne are the new owners of the legendary and much loved Zenith owned by previous officers Art and Betsy Fowler and Bill and Susan Nork. Egan shared that Rick Van Mell, our stalwart webmaster, was missing due to a medical procedure and was sorely missed. Egan also shared that Mike Patterson our treasurer and Liz Munnelly our PICYA rep were skiing so former treasurer Roy Samuelson stepped in and made a convincing argument that the Association is solvent. The Commodore then shared the racing and cruising calendar for 2026 with an emphasis on destination races that could double as a cruise. Finally, we awarded the Schneider Cup to Kerry Scott, owner of Cali for his long-time support of the I 36 Association. Congratulations Kerry!

Most folks then repaired to the bar and dining room for drinks and the great menu and service at Encinal Yacht Club. Just before a final night cap the Commodore noticed a boat circling the entrance to the harbor and ran down to find intrepid single hander Dan Throop on WindCatcher looking for a berth. Dan spent the day racing in the shorthanded Corinthian Race so arrived too late for the festivities. Once tied up Dan joined Dan Knox and others on Luna Sea for a late dinner and drinks before everyone retiring for the evening. Sunday morning was a bit cooler but offered nice conditions for the trip home. Nice weekend. Enjoy the photos and make sure to sign up for the next events. Commodore Egan
