2008 Islander Rendezvous
Telegraph Harbour Marina
July 4-6th 2008
The 4th Canadian Islander Rendezvous held at Thetis Island was again a resounding success. Fifteen Islanders of various models and vintages gathered at Telegraph Harbour Marina for three days of festivities. A special guest for 2008 was Pandora Nash-Karner from Los Osos, California who flew up to participate in this year's event. Pandora owns Califia, a 28 ft Islander, and has been designing the event logo since its inception.
Arriving boats ranged in size from the Robert Perry designed 28 ft Lynne sailed by Brian Arthurs from Brinnon Washington to the massive 55 foot Bide-a-wee sailed in by Mike & Janice Fournier of White Rock BC. Friday's weather was sunny and warm with a steady south-east wind sparkling the blue waters. Evening had early arrivals enjoying the impromptu dock party as Islanders began to arrive.
The threat of morning showers unfolded on Saturday morning as a hardy group of sailors took Bide-a-wee out for a run in Stuart Channel. Not that the showers look forbidding, but one good downpour certainly made for a very wet crew! The warm sun broke out in the afternoon with boat visiting and socializing the activity of choice.
The traditional appetizers were spread out on the tables at the pavilion as the evening approached and everyone gathered for the barbeque. The inspiring and delectable appetizers were enjoyed by all while the coals were warming up on the bricks. Bert & Carey Vermeer, the event organizers, presented two one year subscriptions to the magazine "Good Old Boat" which were donated by Mark Busta of Good Old Boat. Mark learned of the event through the Islander Sailnet information web site and, as a former owner of an Islander 32, kindly offered the two one year subscriptions as prizes. The barbeque was enjoyed by all even through fire suits should have been available that close to the massive brick pit!
In the modern age of digital photography, photos taken during the day were rounded up by Bob Everson of Wild Hare and, using a power point projector, illuminated onto a brand new mainsail on Greg & Leslie's "New Spirit" as darkness fell. A tradition at the Rendezvous that is enjoyed by all (with not too many cat-calls).
Sunday morning breakfast on the dock under sunny skies was most welcome. The hot coffee in the big pot was ready on time (I wonder who plugged that in at 6 am?) and the French Toast prepared by Greg Mathews was delicious. By noon boats were drifting out of the harbour and on to new destinations. A great start to the summer sailing season!
