Head Drain Replacement

Here Roy Samuelson's 2021 project to replace the corroded drain in the head floor.

Replacing the bathroom floor drain strainer

The floor strainer in our 1980 model was quite corroded and I wanted to replace it. Turns out the strainer is only held in place by a bead of silicone caulk so it is fairly easy to replace. I used a chisel and screwdriver to pry up around the edges. Then inserted the screwdriver into the strainer to twist it out, with a lot of force.

I bought an almost identical stainer at my local hardware store.

a new one.
Before inserting it, I ran a plumber's snake up the tube connecting the basin under the bathroom to the bilge just to make sure there was no blockage as we have never used the shower. I cleaned the area around the strainer with acetone, applied masking tape to the opening, inserted the stainer to draw a line around the perimeter, then cut away the inside in an effort to control spread of the caulk. I applied caulk to the inside edge of the hole and the underside of the strainer, pushed it into the hole. Yes, yes, I know it's a little off-center.

looks great.

Good luck on your attempt.
