Encinal & Svendsen's Cruise April 28, 2007 |
(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)
Our first cruise to Encinal Yacht Club got off to a great start on Friday and kept going right through Sunday morning. 27 Boats were represented by 68 people. 17 boats qualified as "dockside", since we gave credit to three that were right next door at Oakland YC and Marina Village. Check out the whole list below.
With eight boats arriving on Friday, there was more than a quorum for cocktails and dinner, with the usual friendly spirit. Mild weather helped too, and all were eager to help Saturday morning's arriving boats tie up Med style - stern too. The "U" shaped guest dock at Encinal is well suited for this gathering, as you can see from the pictures with seven Islander sterns to the dock.
On a sunny Saturday morning, chores were done, some serious relaxing, and then an impromptu dockside lunch materialized with various contributions. Just looking at those goodies make you hungry.
Encinal's renovated swimming pool area was a perfect place for the afternoon BBQ. The water sparkled and with warm temperatures, was really inviting for the kids present, with great supervision by parents and grandparents. You can see the list in the table below, but kids hailed from Evanescence, Ophira, 4 Our Sanity, and Lean Times.
Our BBQ was Encinal's first in this new area, and their big grill was just the thing to hold a bunch of burgers, dogs or chicken, with tables for beans, plates and rolls, and a salad bar for the rest. The brownies went fast too. It was delightful to sit in sun or shade as you chose.
Before we knew it, it was 5:15 and time to buddy up for rides to Svendsen's great Islander Discount Night. This being about the 5th such annual event, Commodore Fowler went out of his way to thank the Svendsen's team and express our great appreciation for hosting these shopping spree evenings. Discounts ranged up to 40% on some items, and with a few bottles of wine and platters of hors de oeuvres, it was hard to tell which were going faster - food or items flying off the shelves.
Encinal Vice Commodore Charles Hodgkins and wife Kathryn treated the fleet to great ice cream when we finally got back to the club around 1900. After such a fun and full day, you could understand why many folks headed for their bunks on the early side. Rick went to work on the first pictures for a web page, and, using Encinal's wireless connection, was able to post a first round of pictures before hitting the rack on Saturday night - first. My, what the marvels of technology will let us do!
Sunday morning Encinal had a large crowd for a complete breakfast buffet. It was Opening Day On The Bay, and Enicnal is a big supporter of the event, with one of the offical boats, with perhaps 100 people aboard, leaving from their docks. We Islanders enjoyed the breakfast too, and it was great.
One by one Islanders left for home, with the docks pretty much clear by noon. It was a great weekend, and we thank Encinal Yacht Club for their hospitality.
