Fall Meeting 11/7/15 at Oakland YC |
(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)
Once again Oakland Yacht Club was the perfect host for our Fall Meeting & Winner's Dinner on Saturday, November 7th. Thanks to the terrific table decorations by Laurie Stover, and the wonderful hospitality of the Oakland staff, led by Elaine Mendes, we had a most enjoyable evening. Starting with an artistic cheese table with smoked guda, soft blue and spiced blue, cheddar, brie and crackers galore, plus veggies with both a mild and a sharp chunky-blue dip made for an easy start to the evening. We all ordered dinner off the menu and the system worked well, though off to a bit of a late start as many people were delayed by exceptionally heavy traffic both coming from San Francisco over the Bay Bridge, and along I-80. When dinner was over, we cheered Elaine and the staff for 10 years of great times under her leadership, and wished Elaine great joy as she leaves OYC to be a full-time mother!
In all we had 49 folks representing 23 Islanders in attendance. While you might think that Brian Arthurs (Cheetah from Port Townsend, WA, or our guest speakers, Bert & Carey Vermeer (Natasha, would get the nod for coming the farthest from Victoria, Canada, the accolade goes again to Ken and Miriam Rappolt (Celebration who flew in from Hawaii. We had a wonderful representation of all ages. Brian Arthurs in his 80s balanced the teens and pre-teens of Califia and Cassiopeia to reflect the life-long enjoyment of sailing on Islanders. Check out the list below for our best recollection of who was there.

After dinner Bert Vermeer gave a wonderful presentation on a month long cruise aboard their Bahama Islander 30 Natasha on the outside of Vancouver Island. Each bay, harbor or anchorage was more majestic than the last. Evergreens wrapping tall mountains from bare rock to the sea; waterfalls in many coves; salmon just jumping onto the grill; and humpback whales playing right alongside. There were lots of questions, and many envious faces who wished they were there. Thanks Bert!

Roy Samuelson led off the Business Meeting with the Treasurer's report - seems Gary & Pat Salvo were checking out anchorages in Hawaii! With most of the year's expenses on the books, except fro the costs of the Fall Meeting, we had net income of $2,400, and would be in the black for the year. Commodore Van Mell joined Roy to distribute $250 checks, usually for their Junior or Women's Sailing programs, to the yacht clubs that hosted Islander events. That included Golden Gate YC for the Spring Meeting and Nationals Regatta; Island YC for hosting the Sail Trim Clinic; Encinal for the Cruise & Svendsen's Night; Benicia YC for the July 4th Cruise; and the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors (BAADS - Orion.
Ruby Blenderman did the honors for the Cruising events for the year, awarding the annual Winton Cruising Award to the Freeport 36 Evanescence - Smokey & Laurie Stover, for attending all of the 2015 cruises and their years of cruising support. Smokey & Laurie had won the Cruising Award in 2003 when they had the Islander 36 Solace.
Kit Wiegman then held court for the racing fleet, giving out beautiful prints-on-canvass for each participant. You can see pictures below of these handsome pictures. The Buster Hammond Trophy went to Windwalker, Rich & Tom Shoenhair, for first place in the Season's Championship. Rick stepped up to award the Nationals Regatta trophy to Kit for Cassiopeia's first place finish. Kit then wrapped up the racing section by presenting the Perpetual Crew Trophy to Daniel Margulies of Orion.
Rick then remarked that your I-36 Association is a coordinated effort of many special people. It is impressive how much time has been committed, and he recognized:
Ruby Blenderman (White Horses) for her last three years as Cruise Chair. Ruby & Rob have been members for 8 years
Kit Wiegman (Cassiopeia) for three years as Race Chair/Measurer - and counting! Kit & Naomi have been members for 9 years.
Bob Knickerbocker (just sold - Woden) for nine years as our Membership Chair. Bob is a 16 year member.
Pat Salvo (Ophira) for six years as Treasurer. Pat & Gary have been members for 22 years!
Gary Salvo (Ophira) for 20 years as our List Administrator!!!!! (Plus being Secretary, Vice Commodore and Past Commodore.)
This year's winner of the Schneider Trophy for service to the Association went to John Melton, Freedom Won, for his years as Commodore, twice winning the Higdon Racing/Cruising award for sailing in all of the races and attending all of the cruises, and his general long-standing support of the Association. John & Nanci are 14 year members.
Dennis Bush then stole the microphone to surprise Rick with an engraved glass decanter for his years of service to the Association.
The last official item on the agenda was the election of the Islander 36 Association 2016 Officers. by unanimous acclaim they are:
Tim Bussiek (Califia) Commodore
Nina Riehs (Orion) Vice Commodore
Roy Samuelson (Some Day) Treasurer
Bill Nork (Zenith) Secretary
Kit Wiegman (Cassiopeia) Measurer
Erick Mueller (Serenity) Fleet Captain
Robert DaPrato (Bella Luna) Cruise Chair
Philip Seaman (ex-Mouse Pad) Newsletter Editor
Alice Butcher (Moon Dance) Membership Chair
Rick Van Mell (Vanishing Animal) Webmaster
So enjoy the pictures, then make a note to check the tides and weather to join the January 1st 'Round Alameda Parade, and March 19, 2016 for the Spring Meeting at Golden Gate Yacht Club.
