I-36 Fall Meeting at Encinal 11/4/17

(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)

A rainy morning gave way to a glorious afternoon along the Oakland Estuary at Encinal Yacht Club for us to celebrate the 2017 season and move forward to 2018. Encinal was hosting a 17-team high school regatta in FJs and we were treated to almost 30 boats on the water racing in A and B divisions. It was great fun to second guess wind shifts and strategy from the balcony as the kids displayed highly refined racing skills.

In all we had 32 folks representing 15 Islanders in attendance. Check out the list below for our best recollection of who was there.

Susan & Bill Nork had arranged for our own I-36 section of the upper deck, and with gracious help from the EYC staff, tables were provided for setting up the trophy display, a sound system, and tables with Susan's flower arrangements. Race Chair Eric Mueller arrived with glasses, personally etched, for the racers, and lifeline cushions which he also made. All was looking shipshape and Bristol fashion for our members.

Your fellow Islanders poured aboard and assembled around the EYC bar, which is shaped like a very nice power boat transom, for attitude adjustment from 1115 right on through to 1210 when (then) Vice Commodore Bob DaPrato implored the crowd to please move on to the great lunch buffet laid out by EYC.

When all were assembled, Vice Commodore DaPrato, having been delegated to run the meeting, called us all to order, and proceeded with the election of officers. Though there were some initial vacancies, volunteers were recruited, and elected were:

Bob DaPrato (Bella Luna) Commodore
Eric Mueller (Serenity) Vice Commodore
Roy Samuelson (Some Day) Treasurer
(Still open) Secretary
Kit Wiegman (Cassiopeia) Measurer

Eric Mueller (Serenity) Fleet Captain
Tim & Linda Barnes, and Dave & Sharon Hanna (Shalinda) Cruise Team
Philip Seaman (ex-Mouse Pad) Newsletter Editor
Jocelyn Swanson (Zingara) Membership Chair
Rick Van Mell (Vanishing Animal) Webmaster

Now Commodore, Bob DaPrato then invited us all to line up for lunch and quickly took control and named tables 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to get in line!
Following lunch, Roy Samuelson led off the Business Meeting with the Treasurer's report. With most of the year's expenses on the books, we had net income of $3,672 before the Fall Meeting expenses and trophy engraving and prizes.

Jocelyn Swanson updated us on Membership and reported we were at about 150 strong, and encouraged us all to reach out to other Islanders along our docks and harbors to invite them to join the fun. She noted that our web site is a big draw, and something we can each promote to other Islander owners we meet.

Treasurer Roy Samuelson pointed out that we had two honorary members with us: Don Wilson and Art Fowler. Don was the initial Islander 36 dealer in the Bay Area and made his first sale to Lou Zevanov (Diana) back in 1971, before the Association was formed in 1974. Then don went on to sell dozens of Islander that became the heart of this Association. Don was a bit more modest with his comments, and noted that he so much enjoys the way the fleet has carried on and supported each other and invited new owners to be part of the Islander family. Art Fowler also spoke about the long and loving legacy of the fleet and the spirit and camaraderie that existed over the years.

Rick Van Mell slipped his Webmaster report onto the tables and, with this Fall Meeting page included, we have passed 25,000 pictures, spread over 471 different pages, to show the world what we do.

Race Chair (and 2018 Vice Commodore) Eric Mueller gave out the racing awards with style and humor. The Ormand Cup went to Windwalker, Rich & Tom Shoenhair, for 1st place in the Season's Championship Spinnaker Division. the Buster Hammond Trophy went to Zingara for 1st place in the Season's championship Non-Spinnaker Division. Eric had also made a pair of etched I-36 glasses for each racer, plus custom made lifeline cushions so the crew could be comfortable when perched on the weather rail. 1st place for the Nationals Regatta went Cassiopeia. Wrapping up the racing section, the Perpetual Crew Award went to John Baum of Cassiopeia.

Bob did the honors for the Cruising events for the year, awarding the annual Winton Cruising Award to John and Nanci Melton, Freedom Won for their support of cruising activities.

Rick then stepped up to present the Schneider Trophy for service to the Association, introducing it with the following:

Two score and three years ago our predecessors brought forth upon this Bay a new fleet, conceived in elegant style, and dedicated to the proposition that all Islanders are created for equal enjoyment.

Now we are engaged in a challenge, testing whether that fleet or any fleet so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on this last engagement of this year. We have come to dedicate this season, as a final resting place for those who here gave their all this year, that that fleet might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate - we can not consecrate - we can not hallow - just this season. The brave men and women, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.

The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. The names of Block, Bush, Farrell, Fowler, Higdon, Hodgkins, Melton, Robinson, Salvo, Schneider, Schoenhair, Schumacher, Szasz, Wall, Wiegman, Wilson, Winton and Zevanov shall kindle our spirits and inspire the future.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us - that from their honored legacy we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that their efforts shall not have been in vain-that this fleet, with determination, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that Islander sailing by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this earth.

And the Schneider Trophy went to Susan & Bill Nork for their contributions to racing, cruising and the administration of the Islander 36 Association.

So enjoy the pictures, then make a note to check the tides and weather to join us Monday, January 1st 2018 for the 'Round Alameda Parade.
