October 8-9, 2005 I-36 Nationals San Francisco YC Gifts from Svendsens & Harken |
(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)
An even dozen Islander 36s competed in the Third "Islander Nationals" regatta hosted by San Francisco Yacht Club with gifts and support from Sevndsen's Boatworks and Harken. In honor or the great racing and sportsmanship, the Blue Angels performed above the fleet on both days. (It was nice of them to perform for San Francisco's Fleet Week too!)
The father-son team of Lou & Steve Zevanov won it all by spiriting Diana past Peter Szasz and Midnight Sun in some of the most exciting racing in memory. Midnight Sun would have bested Diana by one point had she not forgotten to put her required tapered-mast penalty weights in her main, which resulted in her withdrawl from Saturday's three races. Steve Schneider's Absolute took second, one point ahead of Barry Stompe and Sylvia Stewart'sTom Cat. Here are the full results:

This series was double the length of any presvious series - six races vs three in prior years. Saturday's racing was in ideal conditions with winds up to 15 knots. Sunday's 4th race started in such light conditions that the race committee abandoned the race and restarted as a new winds filled in from the golden Gate. Though Saturday had been predicted for 15 - 25 knot winds with gusts to 30, it was Sunday that brought winds up over 20 resulting in some withdrawls and gear failures.
But the fun never stopped. SFYC hosted another great BBQ on their deck where the Islanders proved themselves fully competitive in the chow line. Just look at all those smiles! The great Svendsen/Harken Nationals T-Shirts were a big success.
Jim Robinson summed up the racing in his usual poetic and humorous style:
Dear Fellow Skippers:
Man you guys got fast!
What the heck happened? We miss a few races this Summer, come back and everybody, and I mean everybody, was eating our lunch. Nice job. I've never seen such close mark roundings, beautiful lee bowing, controlled drops, close starts, door slamming, and fast Islanders in my 15 years of racing these darn Ford Station Wagons.
Sorry we had to drop out of the last two races. We're all fine but PILOT needs a little work I'm afraid.
Great job you guys - that was blast. I was really impressed, and humbled. Please send food to my crew care of PILOT, SFYC.
Who won anyway? Last time I saw Diana she had flames coming out of her stern……….
Congratulations to all those boats that just walked by us, tacked on top of us, closed the door at the windward mark, and beat the pants off us this weekend. You know who you are….the list is long and prestigious….I hate all of you.
Jim Robinson
PILOT
Ps. My wife is holding me responsible for our poor showing (correctly so I might add)…thanks a lot you guys.
Pictures are compliments of Barbara Henderson & Lou Zevanov.
