6th Canadian All Islander Rendezvous
Telegraph Harbour Marina, Thetis Island
July 6-8, 2012

(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)

The 6th Canadian Islander Rendezvous was a resounding success blessed with perfect weather, an idyllic setting, and a great group of Islander yacht owners. 20 Islanders ranging from 28 to 40 feet in length attended this bi-annual event held at Telegraph Harbour Marina on Thetis Island. The event began with the "informal" pot-luck appetizer gathering Friday evening that historically was intended to provide a meet & greet for early arrivals. As it happened, everyone arrived by Friday evening! The weather for the weekend promised to be spectacular and the Friday night proved warm under a clear sky. The food was plentiful on the dock and the company great. Carey, Natasha and I met old friends from previous Rendezvous and welcomed new participants to what looked to be a great weekend. Unfortunately, Gwen Denluck & Terry Dow, new participants to the event, had struck a rock with Elizabeth Rose (ER) in Trincomalli Channel on their way to Telegraph Harbour. With water seeping into their I 36 they elected to return home to initiate repairs and couldn't enjoy the hospitality.

Saturday morning dawn sunny and warm, a lazy start to the day with no formal plans for the day. By noon the "show & tell" part of the gathering was in action. The highlights included the completely rebuilt I 28 "Polaris" owned by Don & Susie Hendrix of Friday Harbour, Washington. An incredible restoration from the keel to the masthead, from a new engine to new paint. The I28 "Island Time" had been beautifully maintained by owners Derek & Allison O'Berin of Nanaimo BC. "Cassiopeia" owned by Ron & Sheila Irland was another well maintained and relatively rare (for BC waters) Islander 32. Then there was "Passat", and Carolyn H, and Emoyeni, and…..fortunately there were many boats that proved that Islander owners are a special group of people. Here's hoping that none are offended with not being singled out for comment. They are all special.

Ron & Tara, owners and hosts of Telegraph Harbour Marina, were everywhere to ensure that the Islander Rendezvous was a success.

By 6:00pm the sun was easing towards the western skies when the brick barbeque was fired up with 40 lbs of old fashion charcoal, a wall of fire and too hot to get close to. Bert & Carey welcomed the group and Natasha and Helen drew names from a hat for two donated subscriptions to the magazine "Good Old Boat". Rick & Ann Berry of 'Equation" and Chis & Joyce Roethle of "Emoyeniwere" the lucky winners.

The barbeque had cooled off somewhat by this time, cool enough to get closer, and dinner was underway. Great food and great company in a most welcome setting. Does it get any better?! John & Marion Rodall presented the traditional dessert cakes emblazoned with the event logo created by Pandora Nash-Karner, a major success again. Some lucky children from boats in the marina managed to make their way to the party to get a delicious piece or two. The evening reluctantly came to a close as dusk fell over the harbour, a very satisfying day.

Sunday morning dawned bright and early. Some of the participants had a long passage to their home ports or other destinations and the large tide swings were to be respected. Coffee, pastries and fruit were available on the dock for those with early departure times. Karen Hobein prepared delicious hash browns aboard "Passat" from the left over baked potatoes from the night before! Boats began to depart with reluctant good-byes as the morning progressed. Bert, Carey & Natasha had made arrangements to cruise over to Montague Harbour with John & Marion Rodall for one more night out before returning to home ports.

All in all, a very successful Canadian Islander Rendezvous for 2012. The next Islander Rendezvous will be for the same weekend in 2014, again at Telegraph Harbour Marina. For those that hanker for an Islander Rendezvous in 2013 Doug & Eileen aboard Tatoosh have indicated that they are planning a Rendezvous for the late spring next year, location to be determined. See Islander Yacht Club NW for further information as next spring approaches.

Bert, Carey and Natasha would like to recognize those who assisted in creating this event and for everyone who participated to make it such a success:
