Vallejo Race April 28/29, 2018 |
Fellow Islanders:
This took a while to get out as I was trying to get a response from a couple of the racers.
For those who missed it the Vallejo was an amazing race this year.
There ended up being a total of 7 Islander 36's in the race. We were spread out over a few divisions with a couple of boats just racing PHRF.
Here are the results of the race up.
Luna Sea, Califia, and Windwalker were all racing in other divisions. If WindWalker had been racing with us he would have been first!

On the way back it was a little more sparsely attended.

CALI ** Kerry Scott 150 DNS (did not enter for return regatta).
Serenity came in first for Spinnaker (we waited to shift up to a larger jib convinced the wind would pick up :)
ZIngara came in first on the non-spinnaker return race and us having a larger jib up than us (110).
Kapai unfortunately ran aground and had to power off. She withdrew from the race. We were glad to hear they got off the mud without too much problem.
Cali did not race on the way back.
The next race is this Weekend It is an interclub race just south of the Bay Bridge.
I hope some more people can make it to this event.
So Far Serenity is the only boat to sign up. I have heard from Zingara but not Kapai or Windwalker yet.
ANYBODY ELSE?
The story...
We had a good start on the wrong end of the line. We got trapped by Zingara to leeward, sometimes a good tactic. In this case they overstood the line by a bit leaving us both back from the pack to the first mark.
A new mark of the course was Red Rock. Every body headed up on a close reach to clear it. The tide was against s so we had an interesting time figuring which way was best and Zingara did a better job of it. We kept high so we could put our chute up at the Richmond bridge and dived for the point in order to stay inside and take advantage of the current benefit.
We hit Point San Pablo and kept in while most headed out. We then went for the mark off pinole and kept inside this time seeing a tremendous advantage in boat speed. This held most of the way across to the Vallejo channel. With light winds it was fun to keep up with some of the trimarans!
We weren't sure where we ended up having lost track of folks that went outside. Turns out we did OK and beat the rest of the fleet into the harbor.
I tried to get a hold of folks off of other boats and ended up catching up with a few, but by the time I got to Zingara they were off to dinner. We would have liked to had a chance to visit. As it was it looks like everyone had prearranged plans and we were pretty much fried! We did talk to a couple of young folks off of Envole driven by a friend Nathalie.
In the morning the winds were calling for 20+ so we switched down to our small sail which in retrospect was a disaster. We had a good start and sat on Zingara's wind until the committee boat came by and asked us all to move to weather to let the ferry go by. It looked like Zingara followed our lead with a small jib. Unfortunately the wind never filled in and I was convinced it would so it took until Pinole point to get smart!
We kept inside playing with Zingara and her larger jib until Pinole point then put up the 135. The wind stayed light and actually died at Red Rock for a little bit. We made it back to the finish off the Richmond Y.C. breakwater and waved to Zingara as they went by the other way having finished ahead of us.
Of course the wind picked up as we headed back home and we had a rollicking time getting back to Coyote point in 20 kts of wind!
All in all a great race with good people and a nice party in Vallejo.
