Fall Meeting & Winners Lunch 11/16/24

(If you like, you can skip down through the prose and go straight to the pictures below!)

A beautiful, blue-sky sunny Saturday was the perfect setting for our 2024 Fall Meeting and Winners Celebration lunch at Coyote Point Yacht Club. Seventeen Islander 36s were represented by 28 people and enjoyed a great buffet lunch, an informative talk by Fleet Measurer Kit Wiegman (Cassiopeia) and a wonderful surprise visit from 91 year old founding member Lou Zevanov. Lou gave an impromptu talk on the earliest days of the Association and how, at one point, there were about 150 Islander 36s in the greater Bay Area. And to top it off, we've got a 1 hour and 11 minute cellphone video of both their talks, the business part of the meeting, and the annual awards presentation. (The link to the video was distributed to our membership group email. If others would like to view it, send your request to our Webmaster.)

Thanks to Jocelyn and Steve Swanson and Commodore Egan, we once again had a delicious lunch at the friendly Coyote Point Yacht Club with great views of the South Bay and easy parking. This was a lunch meeting to make it easier for members to get to the event and home again after the meeting. And, with contributions from various Board members and the Association, the cost was held to $30 per person. Our menu included Cheese & Crackers for Nibbles, Spinach and Feta Salad, Marinated Chicken, Grilled Salmon, Veggie Side Dish, Rice, Sour Dough Bread & Butter, and Cake for Dessert

A lively Attitude Adjustment gathering occurred between 11:30 and shortly after noon. Great conversations with cheese and crackers eased everyone into lunch.

After lunch, Commodore Rick Egan Welcomed fired up an informative PowerPoint presentation and began by noting that we are celebrating 50 years of Association memories and that some of our trophies have run out of room for new winners. Kit Wiegman transferred the Nationals Trophy to a new board and we now have room for 13 more winners. Same for the Commodore's Plaque where we also gained at least 13 years by consolidating multi-year Commodores from multi-plate to one plate. Kit will also refinish the old Nationals board and transfer the The Crew Award to it to gain additional years.

Then we had Kit's talk, and Lou's presentation. Mike advised that we have about $10K in the Treasury with about 112 active members.

Commodore Egan then presented the 2025 Officers slate, and invited volunteers for Vice Commodore, Race and Cruise Chairs. Those nominated were unanimously approved. (Anyone voting "No" would automatically be placed in one of the vacant positions. 😂 )

Commodore: Rick Egan (Kapai)
Vice Commodore
Treasurer: Mike Patterson (Green Flash)
Secretary: Barney Brickner (Barnacle)
Measurer: Kit Wiegman (Cassiopeia)
Fleet Captain
Cruise Chair
Newsletter Editors: David Wadson & Cara Croves (Jubilee
Webmaster: Rick Van Mell (Vanishing Animal)
Staff Commodore and PICYA Representative: Jocelyn Swanson (Zingara)

The next treat on the agenda was a presentation of the Fleet Survey recently conducted. The details are in the PowerPoint presentation. Some highlights included 60% would prefer to sail to meetings, and Richmond, Encinal, Golden Gate and San Francisco yachts clubs are most favored. For cruises, the New Year's Day 'Round Alameda and Summer Sailstice Rally got high marks. Under racing, spinnaker and non-spinnaker choises were about evenly split, with the Vallejo Race, Jazz Cup and Encinal Pt. Bonita events getting higher scores. Our Non-Resident population had a 93% interest in scheduled zoom meetings on various topics. On general membership topics, our Web page, Newsletter and group email list all got 4.6 stars, with our membership in PICYA rating 3.6. Certainly nice, since PICYA is a strictly California organization; however, you may be abel to use your I-36 / PICYA membership card in other parts of the country.

Commodore Egan then presented the rest of our awards:
The Spinnaker Division Season's Championship Ormand Cup went to Dan Knox, Luna Sea.
The Non-Spinnaker Buster Hammond Half Hull went to Rick Egan, Kapai.
The Perpetual Crew Award went to Justin Hughes aboard Luna Sea. (Justin was planning to join us but came down with a bug and respectfully stayed away not to share it.)
The Nationals Trophy went to Kit Wiegman, Cassiopeia.
The Schneider Trophy for outstanding contributions to the Islander 36 Association went to Dan Knox for continuing service above and beyond.
And the Commodore's Plaque was updated with Rick Egan's name to the new format for for 2022 - 2025, thus being recorded as the Commodore for the 50th year of the Association!

So enjoy the pictures, then plan to join us New Year's Day, Wednesday, January 1st, 2025 for the 'Round Alameda Parade. New Year 2025 tide predictions are about as good as they ever get, so, weather permitting, put this event on your calendar! Plan to rendezvous in the Estuary off Encinal YC at 1000 hours on a rising 5.8' tide. We'll proceed to Aeolian Yacht club arriving by 1100 when the tide is 6.3'. Enjoy their wonderful Chili, Cornbread, Bloody Mary's and Gin Fizzes by noon when the tide peaks at 6.4'. That's as good as it gets to go out under the Bay Farm Bridge into south San Francisco Bay to enjoy an afertnoon of sailing. If you arrive at Ballena Bay YC around 1300 to enjoy their hamburgers, you still have 5.9' of tide. But don't dawdle too long as by 1800 it's a -1.1' tide getting back into your home marina.
